Secure Shell, also known as SSH, is a cryptographic network protocol that is used to execute commands on a remote machine or to exchange info between a website hosting server and a client. As the data exchanged by the 2 sides is encrypted, a 3rd party simply cannot intercept it, which makes SSH a preferred means of managing a web hosting account. The commands that may be executed are determined by the type of hosting service. On a shared server, for example, the possibilities are limited as you simply won't have root access to the web server, so you could just create/move/delete files, set up and unpack archives, export and import databases, etc. They're all actions that are carried out inside the shared hosting account and do not require a higher level of access. By using a virtual or a dedicated server, you will have the option to install server-side software or to restart the server or only a certain service (web server, database server, etc.). SSH commands are submitted through a command line, and if you don't use a UNIX-like Operating System, there are a number of apps for other OSs, which you can use to connect to the remote web server as well.

SSH Telnet in Website Hosting

SSH access is provided with all website hosting that we offer. With some of them, it is featured as standard, while with others it's an optional upgrade you can include with a couple of clicks in your web hosting CP. You can obtain SSH access through the section related to it where you shall also find the information which you need to connect - the host, the port number and the username. You will be able to choose the password that you will use and, if necessary, you shall be able to modify it with a few mouse clicks from the same spot. All commands which could be used with our shared packages are listed in a help article together with relevant examples. If the SSH access feature is permitted for your account, you'll also be able to upload files through your preferred FTP client via an SFTP connection.

SSH Telnet in Semi-dedicated Servers

SSH access is offered as standard with some of our semi-dedicated server packages, while with others you can add it through the hosting CP if needed - even only for the current month. In either case, you can activate and de-activate the feature with one mouse click through the SSH section of the CP. In the same location, you'll see the server name, the port number and the username needed to connect to our platform. You will also find a box where you can easily input the password that you would like to use, because it doesn't need to be the same as the one you use to log into the Control Panel. For better protection, you could also change it as often as you need. A full list of the commands that can be performed in a semi-dedicated account is supplied in our Knowledge Base, along with the syntax and a few instances. An extra feature after SSH access is activated shall be the ability to connect to your hosting space via SFTP through any FTP client which supports such connections.

SSH Telnet in VPS Servers

All our VPS server offers come with SSH access by default, so you shall not have to include any upgrades or enable anything - as soon as the server is set up and you receive its login info, you will be able to connect via its main IP address and the login credentials that you've chosen through the signup process. Due to the fact that the VPS accounts come with full root-level access, there are no restrictions in terms of the commands that you may run. Your server shall be isolated from the other ones on the physical machine, so you will be able to manage more or less everything using a command line, including server-side software installations and reboots. Thus, you may work with your files, databases and any apps which you install in a fast and protected way.
